Living in Uppsala everyone knows that a) a bike is a very handy thing to have here and b) one’s bike might and will be stolen at some point. Now I have a c) to add: the police are doing little if anything to change b).
The Police Authority of Uppsala County promises the public to put more effort into dealing with theft of bikes in the biking city of Uppsala. They will take more seriously the reported cases of bike theft and actually look for the stolen bikes by literally checking the bikes parked in the streets if they are reported as stolen. Hardly seems like a very effective use of resources!
In September 2007 the police got a tip about a cellar in one of the buildings of Uppsala full of (presumably) stolen bikes. Having examined the place and admitted the bikes most probably had been stolen the police did little if anything to actually return the bikes to their owners and catch the thieves.
The thieves on the other hand did not waste time (not knowing that they did not have to rush as nobody was doing anything to stop them). They regrouped and took out the bikes to a new hiding place.
Not a single photo was take by the police, not a single fork serial number was written down. The person who had discovered and reported the suspicious bikes was not asked for more information. I wonder if this case was too easy for the police, not enough of a challenge.
So here there are a few of them, probably sold long ago. The young guys who did that walk around probably proud of themselves for fooling the police. It is not hard to fool someone who doesn’t really care.
